How interesting we are as humans are and so predictable. While spending my time doing my observation, it was interesting to see how predictable people could be by first impressions. I learned that many of the facial expressions, gestures, and body language are universal. I hadn’t given it much thought prior to this exercise. Like so many people in the videos said, they didn’t think about it either, it was just something that was done.
Thinking about the phone call question, I thought how do I respond? So I asked my children to randomly come up to me and the phone to see what I do. Guess what???? Here’s a shocker….. I held my finger up to tell them to wait. If they were persistent and wouldn’t go away from that clue, I held my whole hand up, narrowed my eyes, and tightened my lips to tell them to stop. How amazing that we do something so simple and it’s understood by so many.
I never really thought of the hand movements or eye movements prior to reading this chapter. I knew body language told people a different story, of what you were vocally telling them. I just didn’t realize how much hand movements and eye movements I use on a daily basis. Some are good while others, well let’s just say I need to work on. This is something I want to set as a goal and work on.
It's crazy to realize on much we rely on nonverbal communication and how easily it is understood by people. There is some type of nonverbal communication in almost every daily conversation!
ReplyDeleteVery true! I noticed how each different person had their own thing going on in their lives but were quite predictable in their mannerisms depending on their surroundings.
