Observation #3

I chose to do my observation at the famous McDonald’s. Wow, what a crazy observation it was! First of all, I noticed the importance of first impression and physical appearance. I think I saw every type of person possible in that short of time. The first encounter that stuck out to me was a mother and her two children. Impatience screamed from her body language! She was rolling her eyes, holding her breath, and her body tighten as she ordered her food. Her children stood beside her yelling what they wanted for lunch. She would flash looks at her children to try and get them to be quiet. The next observation was a table of construction workers. There nonverbal communication was exactly the same, tired. One man kept rubbing his face with his hands. Another lowered his head and closed his eyes to rest. No verbal talking was shared with these men.
The most interesting thing that happened was in the playground area. A child was teasing another child who seemed to be their sibling. The father grabbed the child’s arm and spanked his behind. The spank was light, quiet, and hidden from most of the people in the area. No words were said during the discipline. The child looked at his father, nodded his head and continued onto playing. Super weird encounter and experience! This observation at a fast food restaurant was definitely the most interesting.

  1. You observed quite the range of people and personalities! I always find it interesting to see people at a restaurant, not talking like the construction workers. I am such a communicator that I cannot imagine turning that off. However, as you observed, their level of exhaustion probably played a role in that. Good job.
