When I signed up for this course, I thought it was just going to be covering sign language and hand gestures. After watching the videos and reading the material, I realized that nonverbal communication deals with so much more such as gestures, emotions, eye and facial expressions, and body language. I now have a better understanding of what nonverbal communication entails.
I learned a lot from the readings and that videos and realized that nonverbal communication is indeed important in our lives. My favorite thing to learn was about Paul Edman's research in Papua New Guinea. His experiment included them showing 3 photos to each of the participants and then telling them a story. Each participant had to point to the picture that best fit the story. With this experiment he was able to conclude that there were 6 universal expressions recognized around the world. Its crazy to think that no matter what culture we come from there are 6-7 expressions that will always be the same.
