Observation #1
I chose to do my observation at my local mall because I thought it would be the most rewarding due to the amount of people there. I was mostly shocked at the nonverbal communication between parents and children. I couldn’t even count the amount of “looks” that parents flashed at children. It was crazy to see how first impressions of people helped predict how parents were going to react. Those looks were obviously something the child had seen before because their behavior changed. For example, I witnessed a little girl who was constantly begging her mother for a new dress. The mother repeatedly told her no but the girl persisted. The mother had finally had enough and shot a nasty look at her daughter. The daughter quickly stopped the behavior and was quiet after that. No words were spoken and that communication came through facial expressions.
Another encounter I saw was between a middle aged couple who were dressed wealthy. As they walked around the mall, they expressed a lot of physical touch. In my opinion, they conveyed too much touch for that age and setting. Touch seemed to be their way of communicating their feelings towards one another. Humans are interesting in the different ways we communicate. By sitting at the mall, it was intriguing on how many different types of language we use.

  1. Great observations! Parents and children share so many different nonverbals. It is amazing to witness the conversations that are happening without the use of verbal communication. Good work!
