Journal #1

Nonverbal communication is used more than I had originally thought. The way each person communicates is very individual, yet there are things that are done without a person’s knowledge that can be seen by others. I was shocked at how many categories there are in nonverbal communication, so I am excited to learn about each of them in more depth and begin to apply what I learn and be able to observe things in different people around me.

I enjoyed learning about how emoticons fit into nonverbal communication, and it really opened my eyes to how much we communicate without our knowledge. Observing people at the store, really helped me to apply these principles and attach the definitions to real life situations. This first week of class and introduction to the topic of nonverbal communication made me realize how relevant this topic will be in my future career as I help families and individuals through life challenges.

  1. Courtney, I felt the same way after doing the reading and watching the videos. I think very few people realize just how much we are communicating through our actions, expressions and even the way we dress. I would much rather have a face to face conversation with someone, than a text conversation. I really don't like not being about to see a persons reaction or hear the tone of their voice. I too hope to use what I learn to better my communication skills in the work place as well as at home.
