Observation 2

I am on a special effects tour with some major EDM Festivals for the summer, and we have a crazy schedule and tour around the world. I'm not in familiar environments very often or for very long, so I don't necessarily have a regular gym or church that I attend. It's made this course a little interesting, but I've actually noticed some neat things that might expand a little outside the scope of the assignment.

I actually was able to go to two different hotel gyms this week and observe: one at a Hyatt in Chicago, and another at a Hilton in Pittsburgh. What stood out to me the most was the different nonverbal ques I was able to pick up on in the two cities.

I never said a word to anyone, but I was able to get an overall feel for the culture just by watching the people. The people I observed in Chicago had a much more fitness and fashion oriented persona. Things were fast paced, well manicured, and directed. The people at the gym in Pittsburgh were more laid back and leisurely. In both places, roughly the same amount of people in roughly the same demographic groups were doing the same things - exercising - but just by nonverbal observation I was able to pick up information about the city and cultures as a whole.

Pretty neat.
