Observation #1- Store –Walmart
Interesting behaviors us humans have. While observing a mom and teenage daughter waiting in the checkout line, I observed so many feelings from the teen. The great and mighty ‘eye roll’ she was disgusted with what her mother told her, the shaking of the head that accompanied it further told me she was beyond disgusted but furious with her mother. Her mother raised the tone of her voice, her eyes were more narrowed, and her lips were closer together, giving the indication that she was pretty upset with her daughter and her behavior toward her. I thought my children had cornered the market on the eye rolls, head shaking, and huffing.
I then observed an elderly couple. He had a twinkle in his eye and his smile radiated the love he had for his wife. She needed help reaching an item, he carefully put his hand onto hers, removed it from the shelf, smiled at her and got the item. After retrieving the item, he put a small kiss on her cheek and she smiled. You could tell they respected, trusted, and loved each other from their interactions.
A man walks in looks like he has been riding a motorcycle with his hair blown all over, head down, scowl on his face and eyes were narrowed. First appearances told me he was intimidating and mad. As I approached him, I said ‘hello, beautiful day today isn’t it.” He then shrugged his shoulders, gave me an eye roll and walked away. My first impression was correct. He was having a bad day.
In my three observations that I wrote about the type of NVC that I observed includes:
Complementing, (older man and woman smiling at each other)
Substituting- (shrugging of shoulders from man)
Vocalics- (mother raising her voice)
Kinesics- (observed in all three)
Haptics- (elderly couple, touching of the hand, kiss on the cheek)
Eye behavior-(teen rolling her eyes, mother narrowing hers, man with narrowed eyes as he walked in, elderly couple love radiating from their eyes)
Physical Appearance-(man with blown hair, dressed like riding a motorcycle)
Facial expressions-(Observed in all three written about)
Excellent observations! It is amazing how many different emotions we can interpret just from observation. Well done. Keep up the great work!
