Observation # 1- Galleria Sunset Mall

In this first week of communications I have learned so much!! In the past I have noticed the different types of nonverbal communication that happens when people interact with each other however, I didn't know there was so many different things to look for when it came to nonverbal communication with one another.

After making my first observation at the mall, I noticed several interactions such as vocalics, kinesics, proxemics, and haptics. When first entering the mall I observed a couple on the lower level talking. The employee working in the mall was talking to the mall security guard. At first I immediately thought something was wrong but then I looked at there body language and I over served they were just talking. The guy (security gaurd) was flirting with the other employee. He was smiling and at a close proximity with her. The employee was making hand gestures and smiling as well. When looking at there postures, I noticed the security guard looked confident, his back was straight and his shoulder were not slumped over.

When entering another store, Franchesca's in the mall, the employee greeted me and said "welcome" very enthusiastic when talking about everything to my mom and I. At several points while in the store she checked on us to see how we were doing by asking us if we needed help. While browsing in the store, we heard a women right outside of the store who was talking to her mom. She sounded angry at her mom and the women helping us in the store seemed alarmed. As we left the store the employee was friendly and smiley telling both of us to come back to the store.

Lastly, as my mom and I were leaving the mall I noticed a father and son. They were hugging and then smiling at each other as they were walking. I noticed by there body language they seemed in good presence with each other and we're having a good time. The son was Hispanic, medium height with black hair, hazel eyes, wearing black pants with a grey shirt. The dad was were a collared shirt, I don;t remember the color and he was were blue jeans.

  1. I notice similar things as well. That's very interesting that people all over have similar cues representing the same things. It makes it easier for us to read peoples body language consistently.
